International cooperation in difficult times: First project of the Transatlantic Cluster for Lightweighting has started

14.05.2019

Trade wars, Brexit and so on – in politically charged times, the Transatlantic  Cluster for Lightweighting (TraCLight) sets a countermark and shows how cooperation between Germany, the USA and Canada works out: 30 partners from the industry and research institutes will put their know-how into three consortia to jointly develop innovative lightweight solutions with a unique selling point.

Following a sponsored two-year conception phase, in which an internationalization concept was drafted, the grant decision for the first of the three projects "HiPTSLAM" was issued and has been in the implementation phase since the beginning of April.

The project HiPTSLAM deals with the development of metal powders from high performance tool steel alloys for additive laser production. Currently, the available and processable metallic materials for selective laser melting are severely limited by weldability. By developing new tool steel powders for additive manufacturing, added values in terms of construction and functional optimizations can be introduced, for example through internal channel structures in highly loaded tools.

Two more TraCLight projects will follow soon:

In the project "Utility-CAR" (JoReiSan) suitable joining techniques for the use of sandwich materials in lightweighting are developed. The third project, "CAR-Body" (HyWet), investigates process parameters and processes for the production of components made of fiber composites with metal inserts.

The German sub-consortium is being funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the funding program for the internationalization of top clusters, future projects and comparable networks.
